Middle School

The International School of Port of Spain recognizes that early adolescence is a critical stage filled with individual and collective potential.

Middle school teachers are committed to caring for students, listening actively, responding to their developmental needs, and creating meaningful and engaging learning experiences for all students. Our middle school prepares students for a successful transition into high school by developing both knowledge and skills.

Our curriculum is designed to address the developmental needs of your adolescents and helps with the transitions from elementary school and into high school. Our work is guided by the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) which includes a Guidance Component as well as a Service Learning Component.

Middle Years Programme

ISPS’s Middle School curriculum delivers years 1-3 of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) and establishes a foundation for success in the final two years of the program when they transition to high school.

Students in grades 6-8 develop an understanding of the IB Approaches to Learning (ATL’s), subject-specific aims and objectives and assessment criteria. Students begin to explore through various service learning projects.

The IB Middle Years Programme Framework guides our teachers in the design of learning experiences that are centered around global contexts and lead to the development of internationally minded learners.

Digital Learners

ISPS students connect with their teachers and classmates on various web-based platforms such as PowerSchool, Google Suite, and Zoom. Teachers integrate tech tools that are designed to enhance both interactivity and visible learning. Middle schoolers develop their digital literacy and citizenship skills to become independent and ethical users of information and to contribute positively within their community.

ISPS Outdoor Education

During regular academic school years, Middle School students look forward to grade level trips that incorporate topics from units covered during the year. These have not been scheduled in recent times due to the COVID -19 Pandemic. We look forward to the return to such trips.

Previous trips are highlighted here.

We teach our students to become independent learners who can recognize relationships between school subjects and the world outside, and learn to combine relevant knowledge, experience and critical thinking to solve authentic problems. Choice and decision-making encourage ownership of knowledge and behavior.
