Students in fifth grade have been learning vocabulary and structures related to the story “Marco el Mago” (Marco, the magician). They do not know the story yet, only the characters, but as part of encouraging them to write short sentences , they begin this week to describe the characters in simple sentences using the vocabulary learned in class. We let the students imagene how the characters’ personality would be and what name they could have in the play.
Making predictions (orally or written) and personalizing the characters before knowing the story can increase students' interest in the play as they will want to read to find out if their predictions are accurate or not.
