Grade 9 students have been busy exploring the idea that meaning in poetry is communicated through the context the poet creates in a piece, his tone and style, including the choices he/she makes about structure, word choice and syntax. In defining what poetry is, they have been broadening their perspectives and are realizing that many forms of artistic endeavors can be considered poetry. So….not just Dr Seuss, or Maya Angelou, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes or Stephen Spender, whose work they have analyzed this quarter, but also to be considered are advertising jingles like the famous “I Wish I Was an Oscar Mayer Weiner" and the theme song for the Fresh Prince of Belair, different forms of rap and other genres that they themselves listen to. Each student will soon choose a song and justify it as poetry, showing how the songwriter uses context, tone and style to communicate a message. “Song as poetry” ...I can’t wait!!
