Stanislavski and Naturalism

Grade 8 students have started the year off in Drama by exploring Naturalism, a key movement in the history of theater. In small groups, they have been researching about the conventions of the style and about Konstantin Stanislavski, a well-known theater practitioner and a pioneer in the acting world. Next, students will present their research and lead each other in a series of workshops intended to explore Stanislavski’s System of Acting.

They will later use the skills they develop in the workshops to explore the Statement of Inquiry (SOI): The complexity of identity and relationships can be communicated in many ways but is open to interpretation by an audience. Through the use of monologue, students will demonstrate their understanding of the conventions of Naturalism as well as the tenets of Stanislavski’s methods.
