Elementary Students Learn About the Body & Nutrition

Grade 3 - Body Systems

Understanding the relationship between a balanced diet and overall health is one area Grade 3 students are inquiring about. Open discussions and creative games are used to guide students through the unit and assist with understanding and making connections. We also look at the importance and function of different body systems (skeletal, muscular, circulatory) and we are able to identify what those systems are and the role they play in our bodies and lives.

The human body is an amazing machine. A body system is a group of organs that work jointly to perform a specific function. The human body has several body systems, however, in this unit the students are covering the more common ones: circulatory, respiratory, muscular, digestive, and nervous, and how they interact with each other.

Grade 4 & 5 - Fitness & Nutrition

Good nutrition and physical activity are important in maintaining good health. Proper exercise and diet can prevent obesity and some chronic illnesses. During our physical and health education classes we try to teach and encourage students to practice healthy habits, both in and out of school. In this unit, we try to educate the students on portion control, meal components, food safety, and ways to promote lifelong physical fitness.

In grades 4 & 5, students are learning to identify muscles and various exercises to develop them. Some of these muscles are; the quadriceps, hamstrings, pectorals, biceps, triceps, and abdominal muscles. While some of the exercises include: push-ups, squats, jumping jacks, lunges, and mountain climbers. Open discussions about the development of muscles and physical fitness are particularly important as students make meaningful connections.
