Reflective Summary

Working at NALIS, the National Library of Trinidad and Tobago, provided an opportunity to work in a public library with all its challenges, especially behavioral issues and the problem of missing books.  Working in the Young Adult Library helped me to see the importance of literacy in general. Many high school students struggle with basic reading problems.

The most gratifying experience of working at NALIS came from working in the Heritage Library, a completely closed reference library. Indexing books allowed me to see first-hand the importance of in depth cataloging because this is the only way a patron can see what is in a book.

The Heritage library demonstrates how important it is to preserve a national and even regional culture. First world countries can take for granted the amount of resources that can be accessed by patrons, but in the case of a small nation like Trinidad and Tobago, or even a region such as the Caribbean, resources are limited.

Librarians must rely heavily on newspaper files created by the Heritage Library to fulfill the research needs of patrons.  It was an amazing experience to see just how many print sources that the Heritage Library has gathered.
