Personal Philosophy
Library Philosophy
Libraries encourage and protect people’s right to access information. They provide patrons with the opportunity and the skills to find print and electronic resources to meet their personal, academic and professional needs. Libraries need to keep up with the latest technology so that patrons can source information, and librarians need to assist individuals in seeking better ways to procure the best and most credible sources.
Although most libraries emphasize the importance of the electronic media, the librarian’s challenge of helping patrons of all ages to develop a love and respect for books cannot be underestimated. This is especially important in a school library where the information specialist is a catalyst for encouraging patrons to develop a keen interest in literature. A good librarian recognizes that reading is a gateway skill to all learning and students can only rise to new levels of understanding by improving their reading skills. Reading enriches students’ lives. Students need to feel free to develop their personal and academic interests by discovering how to access a wide range of print and electronic resources.
The school librarian supports parents, teachers and students in their quest to help students achieve academic success and personal enlightenment. A librarian’s ultimate goal is to provide students with confidence and a zeal for developing knowledge by feeding their curiosity and helping them to understand the importance of always seeking new and better information. A library should be a magical place filled with opportunities to learn and be creative. It should feel like the place you want to go to discover more about yourself and your world.
